What factors affect the speed at which water flows down a sink?

1. Pipeline design and structural factors

Pipeline diameter and slope

Diameter: The smaller the inner diameter of the sewer pipe, the more limited the water flow cross-sectional area, and the slower the flow rate (for example, for the common 40mm or 50mm pipe diameter, the drainage volume can be increased by about 30% for every 10mm increase in pipe diameter).

Slope: If the slope is insufficient during pipe installation (the standard slope should be ≥2%), the water flow is easily retained due to insufficient gravity, and even a "dead water section" is formed.

Number of bends and interfaces

The more pipe bends (such as S bends and U bends), the greater the water flow resistance, especially right-angle bends, which will reduce the flow rate by about 40%.

If the interface is not sealed tightly or has burrs, it is easy to cause water turbulence and even hang debris.

Sewage device structure

The traditional bounce-type sewer is about 20% slower than the flap-type sewer because internal parts (such as sealing rings and springs) are prone to accumulation of debris.

Large-aperture drains (such as 114mm diameter) increase drainage speed by about 50% compared to conventional 90mm apertures (such as the Bertha sink case of NUOMI Hardware).

2. Blockage and debris accumulation

Solid impurity blockage

After food residues, grease, hair, etc. enter the pipe, they are easy to adhere to the pipe wall to form a blockage, especially when grease solidifies at low temperatures, it will reduce the pipe diameter (if the filter is not installed, the probability of blockage increases by 70%).

Scale and rust

After long-term use, scale (calcium and magnesium ion deposition) or metal rust on the inner wall of the pipe will narrow the inner diameter of the pipe, and the rough surface will increase water flow resistance.

3. Sink and drain design

Sink drain outlet position

Compared with the central drain outlet, the side drain outlet (such as the Bertha seamless sink) can reduce the distance from the water flow to the drain outlet, and the drainage efficiency is improved by about 30%.

Filter device design

Although fine filters can intercept debris, too small pores (such as <1mm) will cause the water flow filtering speed to decrease. It is recommended to choose a removable filter with a pore size of 3-5mm.

4. External environment and usage habits

Air pressure and pipe ventilation

If the drainage pipe is not equipped with a vent, negative pressure is likely to form in the pipe during drainage, hindering the water flow (similar to when the "siphon effect" is blocked, the drainage speed can be reduced by 50%).

Drainage load

A large amount of drainage in a short period of time (such as washing a large number of dishes at the same time) will exceed the drainage capacity of the pipe, causing the water to drain more slowly.

Use of detergents

Excessive use of viscous detergents (such as dishwashing liquid) may produce foam, occupy the pipe space, and affect the water flow speed
